Came here with my son (27) after a long bout of depression brought upon by his brief incarceration. When I heard the Green Briar was closing, I told him to meet me here. It was here in 1988 that I had watched the final episode of St. Elsewhere, and I pondered that now St. Elsewhere was old enough to not hang out all day with its dad and not even listen to its Uncle Donald about his idea for a dragon anymore, and so with my son getting out of jail, I decided it was time to tell him a few home truths.

Firstly, that I know his roommate Wolfie had been stealing his blood.

Secondly, that I know he has not been keeping Kosher, and I saw a photo of him eating at Subway on Flickr.

Finally, that I saw he has purchased his own Hulu account, and is no longer watching Chicago Fire, nor keeping the Wikipedia article about the show refreshed.

As he arrived at the bar, I had arranged for the bartender to deliver him a large bowl of soup. I was hiding behind a partition wall. He queried the bartender, but the bartender Mike said I had called ahead and that he should eat it before it got cold. As he slurped, Mike asked him about his family, and casually shifted conversation to prison, and then to Chicago Fire. When he said he used to watch the show, but hadn't seen it at all this season, I gave Mike the signal and Mike snatched away the soup.

As I lept from behind the partition, I began to wonder if this was the end of the road for us. To be honest, the soup snatch hadn't really given the message I had hoped. I asked if there are animals in prison. He said there aren't.

After running through the configuration options on my new iPhone SE, I concluded that Steve Jobs had died for nothing, and hastily returned my SIM card to the Samsung Galaxy S3, and my new earring to the trashcan.

I told him while he was away there was a new computer animated movie in the Top Cat franchise, released in Mexico and that I had purchased a DVD copy. He said he was feeling tired and needed to sleep for his new job tomorrow, working in a kiosk that cuts keys.

I hope we'll return to The Briar before they close. Perhaps in better times.

Update. A message from Trish.

Dear Max, Please do not return to the Green Briar, ever. Thank you, Everyone who ever graced the door at 304 Washington Street

Well, I can't because it's closed, Trish. I'm very sad about this too.

5 stars.
